In 1995, my wife Kim-pregnant with our son Dawson-and I decided that we needed an addition to our house. The "addition" was going to be twice the size of the original, with a somewhat "funky" structure. By chance, our architect struck up a conversation with Rigsby at Ro-Mac Lumber and Supply; he expressed interest in the project and after and an interview with us, sealed the deal.

The things that we most appreciated about Rigsby were that he worked daily alongside his carpenters, until the job was done; when needed, he used only subcontractors of whom he had personal experience; he was deeply knowledgeable about all aspects of construction; he used quality materials; and he always got the work done with a high level of craftsmanship. These and other tenets form the "Rigsby Jones Philosophy of Construction, (and life in general)," which he might share with you if you have a minute… or three.

Because we lived in the old house while they built the addition, Rigsby and his associates became a part of our family. Rigsby’s joy for life, his abundant stories and anecdotes, and his commitment to our community made the work that he did for us much more than a contractual job. Twelve years ago, my wife and I hired Rigsby Jones, on the advice of a friend, to renovate our newly purchased single-family house built in 1940. The house had been standing empty for a year, and needed some serious maintenance, updating, and expansion, including a new roof, HVAC, and plumbing, removing interior walls, and refinishing all surfaces inside and out. Mr. Jones drew a plan based on several conversations with us and some design options sketched up by an architect friend, and we shook hands with “Rigs” and hoped for the best. The next day, he showed up on time with several colorful but seemingly honest characters who were also crack carpenters, and off to the races we went.

The man is brilliant, honest as the day is long, works like a draft horse, and although he can charm the birds out of the trees, he also knows Tallahassee and the construction trades. He knows how old houses are built, and nothing surprises him. He and his carpenters worked for months while we paid the bills, tore nails out of ancient yellow pine studs in freezing weather, and watched our charming old house that had been long neglected slowly come back to life. At worst, it was not a nightmare. At best, it was exciting and a pure delight to watch him and his loyal crew work hard and solve the countless issues and problems involved with renovating an old house.

In the end, we ended up with a solid, tasteful renovation that, although it seemed expensive at the time, has proved to be a solid investment and an excellent place to raise a wonderful child and pass the time of our lives in.

Rigs and Dan have come back several times to replace old doors and windows, seal unknown openings, and to provide advice on how to keep an old house alive and well in a time when craftsmen are rare and precious. We have complete confidence in Rigs and we would recommend him to anyone who has an eye and a taste for quality and craftsmanship, and who might also enjoy a long but good chat with an engaging character who is a slice of real Tallahassee. - Stephen M.
